Investing in cities has been central to our business since Citi was founded in 1812; it is in our DNA.

What's happening?

While the rise of megacities captures headlines, cities of all sizes are growing rapidly. Municipal governments are looking for new ways to address residents' growing needs for affordable housing, social services, energy, economic empowerment, financial inclusion and infrastructure. They need partners to help them address entrenched barriers to urban progress and provide tools and solutions to connect citizens to services.

What Citi is doing

As more people around the world move from rural to urban areas in unprecedented numbers, we are expanding our work to help build vibrant, inclusive cities. Citi finances infrastructure, stimulates local economies enables public services to run smoothly and helps residents to attain financial success.

What Citi is doing

Support for Immigrant Communities and Municipal Partnerships

To integrate naturalization and financial services for more financial security in immigrant communities, Citi supports the New York Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) citizenship program, NYCitizenship. We work with the Parsons School of Design and MOIA to streamline and accelerate services and expand outreach. We helped launch the Ventanilla program to guide Mexican matrícula consular identification holders on using their credentials to access financial products. We partnered with the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) to launch the Immigrant Business Initiative offering entrepreneurial courses and technical assistance to low- and moderate-income immigrant entrepreneurs and small business owners.

WE NYC Propels Women Entrepreneurs

WE (Women Entrepreneurs) NYC is an initiative championed by New York City First Lady Chirlane McCray, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development Alicia Glen and Citi. Our goal is to expand women entrepreneurship in New York City, especially for underserved women and communities. Over the next three years, WE NYC will connect 5,000 women to free training and business services to help them start and grow their businesses through the city's Department of Small Business Services (SBS) and public private partnerships. Besides program support, our staff contributes expertise, skills and time on WE NYC's advisory board.

Building Communities for Our Nation's Heroes

Nearly 50,000 homeless veterans sleep on America's streets. Citi is committed to provide affordable housing options for these heroes. Through Citi Community Development, we partner with the Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC) and National Equity Fund (NEF) on Bring Them HOMES, which secures predevelopment funding for transitional housing for homeless, at-risk and low-income veterans, service members and their families. So far, we have contributed $1.7 million to help create 21 affordable housing developments in U.S. cities. In 2015, we celebrated the opening of Odyssey family residences in Denver, Colorado, a 36-unit facility. Measuring the Sustainability and Competitiveness of Mexican Cities

First launched in 2013, the Sustainable and Competitive Cities Index is the first index of its kind in Mexico that combines economic, social and environmental indicators to comprehensively evaluate the sustainable development of Mexican cities. The index, issued by Citibanamex in partnership with key public and private stakeholders, aims to not only highlight the importance of these factors to healthy and thriving cities but also promote innovative solutions to municipal challenges that can be replicated by local governments. The 2015 edition included 78 cities in more than 379 municipalities and evaluated more than 100 indicators, from economic stability and local government effectiveness to land use and energy efficiency.

Through Citi for Cities, our firm helps address challenges including affordable housing, employment, entrepreneurship, access to city services and financing sustainable urban growth projects.

We closed a record 228 affordable housing financings in 2015, totaling $4.8B in loans for more than 39,000 units across the United States.
